Hey fedi, so I have this cheap doohickey for using computers away from a desk. It's got a touch pad and keys and is absolutely the right solution for the problem
But it sucks. The keys start bad and if used too much stop registering reliably, the touch pad ain't great, and it keeps losing connection to the dongle despite it being like 8 feet away
Is there some kind of premium version of these that exists? So far I've only ever seen the terrible dirt cheap ones for sale anywhere
(If you don't mind plz boost for reach I am *desperate*)
EDIT: to be clear the handheld/gamepad-like form factor is what makes this work so a more traditionally keyboard shaped device with an additional trackpad isn't really a suitable replacement
@eniko I've really only seen the dirt-cheap ones. Here's hoping by boosting your post this may change for us both.
@RandamuMaki @eniko Same. I'm on my second of these and the build quality is shockingly bad. The thing flat out stops working if the flimsy plastic battery cover isn't smushed on exactly right - but the basic mini keyboard/touchpad combo is exactly what I need.
@eniko all the ones we've seen are pretty clearly that exact device, under different brand names
@eniko
It's not really the same but I've used a Logitech K400 for this sort of purpose and it works pretty well at a distance.

@BobDendry @eniko oh awesome this is the device I had in mind but forgot everything about it
@LottieVixen @BobDendry @eniko I have that one as well and it works fine. It can be used as a desktop keyboard in a pinch as well. I am doing so at the moment, as a matter of fact
@ElBeeToots @LottieVixen @BobDendry @eniko if the touchpad on the side is awkward, consider something like https://amzn.to/3YwdEPo where the touchpad is on the bottom like a laptop without a screen or internals
as for explicitly handheld stuff, there really isn't anything you can get that's amazing in that form factor. most of... least-bad ones are made by a brand called "rii", and they cap out around $40-ish
i guess https://amzn.to/3EknQ6O is halfway in between? trackball, not touchpad
@trwnh @ElBeeToots @LottieVixen @BobDendry oh that looks interesting, bookmarking this one
@BobDendry I tried using a mini keyboard like that before but it just is too large for me
@eniko @BobDendry My favorite feature of the K400 is the duplicate mouse button on the upper left corner. I mouse around like a game pad, and set the whole thing on my lap when I need to type.
I wish there was a higher quality version. The keyboard has a whole has too much physical flexibility.
@jkaniarz @eniko @BobDendry The flex (maybe due to the recycled plastic?) and the squishy typing experience and possibly the shape of the keycaps doesn't help.
I was vaguely tempted to try the K400 non-Plus or the K600, but not enough to buy them and both of them seem to be discontinued.
@snowfox @eniko @BobDendry Logitech has a new proprietary wireless dongle so I assume all the “Logitech Unifying” hardware is on the way out.
@BobDendry @eniko We have used these in our work environment and they are probably the highest quality version of this you can still buy.
@eniko I know several people who use similar device, except the touchpad is on the right side of keys – those seem to have a slightly better keyboard.
@jernej__s @eniko i have one of those, and had the other kind that OP has, and i haven't had issues with the keyboards but i have had issues with the touchpads. idk what's causing it but it likes to be weird sometimes
@jernej__s @eniko almost feels as if it was picking up on some kind of interference
@eniko The high end version would probably be that, a full keyboard with touchpad that can be used on your lap: https://www.logitech.com/en-us/shop/p/k400-plus-touchpad-keyboard.920-007119
An old and quirky solution would be to use a Xbox 360 gamepad and its keyboard. You can then combine it with some piece of software to use a gamepad as a mouse:
https://github.com/Tylemagne/Gopher360
okay so I looked it up, yes
if you have steam installed, big picture mode > settings > controller > scroll to the bottom to non game controller layouts then edit, enable steam input :D then it seems to work just like the steamdeck input
@boxofsnoo @eniko @zip @loic there's also software-only ways to achieve that. Off the top of my head I know Steam's controller settings can do it, but there are open source options too, for example AntiMicroX [github.com] (cross-platform)
@loic using a keyboard on my lap just doesn't work nearly as well as one you can hold up and operate with thumbs
@loic@pouet.chapril.org @eniko@peoplemaking.games the ps3 controller also had one and iirc it has a mouse built in
@loic @eniko the original #Xbox360 #Chatpad sadly isn't reachable as a regular keyboard in my testings on #Linux.
Otherwise I do love it as it's a #BlackBerry-Style clicky board...
Kinda like the CTFWIKE-4 [infosec.space]....
@eniko@peoplemaking.games nah, just move your computer the 8 feet to where u are or u move 8 feet to the computer. problem solved.
@eniko I’m not sure if I can help much, but I’ve had this “Rii” one for a few years and it works okay - but I only use it very rarely so can’t comment how reliable the keypresses are: https://amzn.eu/d/8vhwQ6m
Got it because it has clickable roller wheel (for middle mouse click and wheel) and left/right click on the bumpers. Bluetooth and 2.4ghz dongle - range always seemed ok but nothing fantastic.
@eniko I never really use the Bluetooth on it, generally stick the USB dongle in when I need to remote something at work. As others have mentioned, the Logitech K400 is good - more reliable, proper keyboard, but obviously a bigger unit (so you can’t eg stick it in a pocket or bag like you can the Rii).
When I’m in office this week I can do a comparative range test if it would help - test the Rii keypresses against K400 and see what kind of range from both the dongles?
@eniko It's quite there on a premium price side and way bigger, but I've recently found Prestigio Click&Touch 2 and I'm really considering it for that use case. It's a laptop-like chicklet keyboard that can turn top of big part of its keys into a large trackpad.
@eniko Maybe something like this?
@0x0961h the gamepad shape is a big reason why I like this device, something more traditionally keyboard shaped has all the wrong ergonomics for me :/
@eniko Ah, sorry. Have you considered keyboard additions to gamepads? There are addons for DS4 (not sure) and DS5 controllers and they themselves come with touchpads, which can act like a mouse pointer.
@0x0961h hmmm
@eniko That, sadly, I can't answer, since I haven't used this combo. :(
@LottieVixen @0x0961h @eniko ps5 ones in particular seem to be very, very low quality compared to the Xbox counterpart
@eniko @0x0961h Some of them appear to be: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/10dhjku/ive_found_the_best_gamepad_and_chatpad_setup_for/
BTW I can vouch for the DualSense controller itself, it's a lot better than XBox Series for operating a PC, so look for chatpads/ keyboards for that.
@eniko @0x0961h I use this set up myself and cannot recommend it based on your issues with build quality. The PS5 pad works as a mouse on windows by default which is a plus for the use case of needing a wireless mouse in gamepad form, but these keyboards are even worse in quality than the device you currently use.
@0x0961h @eniko I do like [infosec.space] these as well due to being compact and clicky.
Sadly none do have a #mouse function [infosec.space] as well...
I think riitek.com own most of this market the various i8 models are the top of the range. The one in the picture looks a bit like an i4.
I wouldn't expect any of the mini keyboards to last long if used for continuous periods. At least none of the ones I've used have
@eniko
I've got one of these...
https://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard/mini-wireless-keyboard-black-with-built-in-trackball-and-scroll-wheel.asp
Same website has laptop-like keyboards with touchpad
Contains Amazon DE links
@eniko I used to use the Logitec Keyboard with touchpad for my TV PC. It was ok, but did not spark joy. Using the touchpad after a hard day gave me tennis elbow. Now I'm with an air mouse that is also a rudimentary IR remote and has a mini keyboard on the back side.
https://www.amazon.de/gp/aw/d/B07FY954Z3
For when I need to do actual typing I have a bigger keyboard with touch pad arround.
re: Contains Amazon DE links
@eniko @flxtr It essentially has an accelerometer and estimates where you're "pointing" at the screen by observing the movements of the device in 3D space. You'd use it kind of like a Wiimote but without a receiver.
(The estimation is surprisingly good but I've found them to be jittery and not really suitable for anything more precise than a TV-style interface with big buttons)
re: Contains Amazon DE links
@joepie91 @eniko @flxtr i have the same "air mouse". when in mouse mode the central OK button is left click, but i didn’t find any way to do a right click. the button bottom-left of OK is the "open context menu" keyboard key which only sometimes does the same as right click would (if the target has focus somehow)
